What is it?
This paper investigates if the way we define our happiness goals impacts how long that happiness lasts!
It challenges the common belief that specific goals are always better, suggesting that when it comes to happiness, aiming for general positive feelings (e.g., feeling good) might lead to more enduring happiness than aiming for specific positive emotions (e.g., feeling excited).
General happiness goals lead to more lasting happiness: People with general goals experienced greater happiness from their purchases 6 weeks later. They also showed slower hedonic adaptation, meaning their happiness faded less over time.
Broader range of positive emotions: Participants with general goals experienced a wider variety of positive emotions, particularly low-arousal emotions like peacefulness and contentment, compared to those pursuing specific emotions.
Increased top-of-mind awareness: People with general goals were more likely to continue thinking about their purchases, keeping them "top-of-mind." This continued attention seems to be a key mechanism explaining the lasting happiness effect.
Pilot studies confirm goal prevalence: Initial studies showed that over 70% of consumer purchases are made with the goal of happiness, and specific emotional goals are more common than general ones.

What do I need to know:
This research provides a fresh perspective on the pursuit of happiness, suggesting that a broader, more holistic approach to seeking positive emotions might be the key to experiencing more enduring happiness from our consumption choices.
Rethink goal specificity for happiness: Contrary to conventional goal-setting advice, seeking general positive feelings might be more effective for lasting happiness than pursuing specific emotions.
Broadening our emotional experiences: Enjoying a wider range of positive emotions could enhance our connection to experiences and make them more memorable.
Staying top-of-mind combats adaptation: Continuing to think about positive experiences can help maintain happiness and slow down the adaptation process.
Proactive approach to emotions: The research suggests we can intentionally shape our emotional experiences through the goals we set for consumption activities.
