Hey, there.
Today, We will be talking about theย Attributional Bias๐ฟ.
What is it?
The bias in which you make assumptions about your own behaviour or events around you.
Exampleย -
When you get a poor grade on a quiz, you might blame the teacher for not adequately explaining the material, completely dismissing the fact that you didn't study.
When a classmate gets a great grade on the same quiz, you might attribute his good performance to luck, neglecting the fact that he has excellent study habits.[1]
Where does it occur?
As it is a type of cognitive biases, you can actually observe this in people around you or in yourself. You will attribute reasons to certain events or actions because you feel so.
Is this jumping to conclusions or attributing things, a good thing to do?
Why do I need to know?
The attributions you make each and every day has an important influence on your feelings as well as how you think and relate to other people.
When bad things happen, you will feel a strong urge to โblameโ it on certain factors but you need to change your focus and mindset towards more important things at that time.
Takeaways:-
Focus on fixing the issues rather than dwelling on what happened or who is to be blamed.
Do know that this is human tendency. Awareness about attributional bias can help.
