Hi, there.
Hope you are having a great week.
Today, Letβs talk about Confirmation Bias β .
What is it?
We tend to listen only to information that confirms our preconceptions.
ExampleΒ -
You would have encountered or met with those people who are always biased to a fixed mindset or point of view toward things.
(One of the many reasons itβs so hard to have an intelligent conversation about climate change. π¦)
Where does it occur?
You can observe this phenomenon on live debates on television where one of the representative βfeels likeβ very much biased towards what their party is doing and why they should be elected.
People with anxiety and self-esteem issues are also prone to this bias. Thus, if you are worried that someone is annoyed with you, You are, subconsciously, biased toward all the negative information about how that person acts toward you. You interpret neutral behavior as indicative of something negative.
Why do I need to know?
You will meet a lot of people in life who will believe what they want to believe i.e. they wonβt accept and entertain other perspectives.
If you can identify these people, you can save your time by not putting in much effort, trying to convince something or proving a point.
Instead, Try to tell them things from their point of view. See if you can sell them by using their own methodology or perspective!
Takeaways:-
It is not always worth to give your time to someone who is strongly inclined to their own point of view and doesnβt see things from different perspective.
Find factors which challenge your own perspective.
Observe yourself and see if there are certain places where you are applying this bias.
