Hello.
Today, We will be talking about theΒ Gender Bias π«.
What is it?
Discriminating a person based on their gender. It is also called Sexism.
ExampleΒ -
You might have already been through or noticed situations where discrimination was happening.
Where does it occur?
People report Gender Bias happening in a number of places such as Offices, Workplaces etc.
It can also be attributed by Unequal pay, No. of opportunities, Positional Bias.
Why do I need to know?
It is rooted in our societal beliefs about men, women and leadership. We believe men should be βagenticβ (assertive, decisive, strong) and women should be βcommunalβ (warm, caring, sympathetic). These gender stereotypes clash with the leadership prototype, i.e. the societal view of what a prototypical leader should be.
The leader prototype shares characteristics with the male stereotype: self-reliant, assertive, dominant and competitive. This prototype is widely shared and, if I asked you to close your eyes and picture a leader, most people would automatically picture a tall, white, middle class man. Conversely, women are seen as caring, sympathetic and sensitive to the needs of others. [1]
