Hey,
Today, We will be talking about the In-group bias 🤼.
What is it?
The times when we conform to what our friends agree with, even though we have a different opinion outside.
Example -
There would’ve been times with your friends when you all agree on some topic like the best NBA player, some opinion on politics etc.
(While deep down, you know that you only agree to that to a certain extent.)
Where does it occur?
As the name suggests, it occurs in places where we socialise. It could be when you are chilling with your friends, in your office or in a meeting about a particular thing.
Why do I need to know?
In-group bias can harm our relationships with people who don’t happen to belong to the same group that we do.
Our tendency to favor in-group members can lead us to treat others unfairly and cause us to perceive the same behaviors among different people very differently depending on their group. We might even feel justified in committing immoral or dishonest actions, so long as they benefit our group. [1]
Takeaways:-
It’s okay to not agree with everything. You can have a different opinion about things.
Sometimes, I personally believe, it’s okay to conform to things in a group just for the sake of fun & times where the impact of conforming is very minimal.
