What is it?
This research paper investigates the effects of pulsed electromagnetic radiation (EMR) emitted from mobile phones on the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brains of rats.
Neurotransmitters are chemicals that transmit signals in the brain, playing a crucial role in various functions, including memory, learning, and stress response.
Key Findings:
EMR alters neurotransmitter levels: Exposure to EMR from mobile phones led to significant changes in the levels of dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), and serotonin (5-HT) in four different brain areas: hippocampus, hypothalamus, midbrain, and medulla oblongata.
Changes varied by brain region and exposure duration: The specific changes in neurotransmitter levels differed depending on the brain area and how long the rats were exposed to EMR (1, 2, or 4 months). Some changes persisted even after a month of no exposure, suggesting lasting effects.
Hippocampus and hypothalamus most affected: The hippocampus and hypothalamus, both important for memory and stress regulation, showed the most significant changes in neurotransmitter levels. This suggests these brain areas might be particularly vulnerable to EMR exposure.
