Hey, there.
Today, We will be talking about theΒ Survey Bias π.
What is it?
Survey Bias is the tendency to overestimate or underestimate a sampling parameter which can affect the data quality. Also known as Response Bias.
ExampleΒ -
Some examples of response bias are given below.
Leading questions. The wording of the question may be loaded in some way to unduly favor one response over another. For example, a satisfaction survey may ask the respondent to indicate where she is satisfied, dissatisfied, or very dissatified. By giving the respondent one response option to express satisfaction and two response options to express dissatisfaction, this survey question is biased toward getting a dissatisfied response.
Social desirability. Most people like to present themselves in a favorable light, so they will be reluctant to admit to unsavory attitudes or illegal activities in a survey, particularly if survey results are not confidential. Instead, their responses may be biased toward what they believe is socially desirable. [1]
Where does it occur?
As the name suggests itself, it is based on variety of survey events or events which require participation of some kind for a certain objectiveβs evaluation.
If you are conducting a survey or collecting feedback from your users regarding your product, there is a little chance that your respondents can be biased.
Why do I need to know?
Survey Bias or response bias is a general term for a range of cognitive biases that influences participants to reply an inaccurate or dishonest response.
You donβt have to take all the βfinalβ decisions based on what X amount of respondents has to say. Majority is there but they are not always right.
Takeaways:-
Your respondents can get or be biased while giving you feedback or filling some survey. Make sure to account that as well.
If majority is saying it, doesnβt mean they are right. Only take that into consideration.
