This study tests ChatGPT's ability to understand and describe emotions, known as Emotional Awareness (EA).
ChatGPT was tested using the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale (LEAS) across twenty scenarios and compared to general population norms.
In the first test, ChatGPT performed significantly better than the general population in all LEAS scales.
In a second test a month later, its performance further improved, approaching maximum LEAS scores.
Licensed psychologists confirmed the context-appropriateness of ChatGPT's EA responses.
This study suggests that ChatGPT can generate accurate EA responses and could have applications in cognitive training for individuals with EA impairments and psychiatric diagnosis.
