Hello,
Hope you are having a good start to 2022 :)
Today, I want to tell you about a moment from history. This was an integral moment as it questioned a lot of studies of psychology.'
This was The Replication Crisis.
What is it?
A 2016 poll of 1,500 scientists conducted by Nature reported that 70% of them had failed to reproduce at least one other scientist's experiment including
87% of chemists,
77% of biologists,
69% of physicists and engineers,
67% of medical researchers,
64% of earth and environmental scientists,
and 62% of all others,
while 50% had failed to reproduce one of their own experiments, and less than 20% had ever been contacted by another researcher unable to reproduce their work.
Several effects in psychological science have been found to be difficult to replicate even before the current replication crisis.
Why do I need to know?
A 2021 study found that papers in leading journals with findings that can't be replicated tend to be cited more than reproducible science.
This replication crisis is NOT limited to psychology but also to fields such as,
Marketing
Economics
Medicine
Therefore, making a lot of studies and researches questionable. My takeaway would be to make sure the studies you sought your decisions after are validated and have their sources legit.
